Renowned for its natural beauty, and considered one of the most pristine islands in the world, Kangaroo Island is an expansive isle just off the coast of Adelaide, South Australia.

With over a third designated as protected nature reserves, the largely untouched island is reminiscent of Galapagos Island, and home to awe-inspiring landscapes, unique wildlife, and a host of friendly locals. Sea lions, koalas, penguins, migratory seabirds, and the eponymous Kangaroo Island Kangaroo can all be found on this sanctuary, alongside natural wonders such as the famed Remarkable Rocks, Flinders Chase National Park, and impressive Admirals Arch stalactite-rimmed rock formation.

A favourite destination for couples, families, and adventurers alike, the island has numerous quality accommodation options dotted around its coast and interior. So where are travellers most likely to stay?

What is the best area to stay on Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island, or “K.I” as the locals call it, is divided into eight distinct regions, with each region possessing unique characteristics:

  • American River – Named after American sealers mistook the ocean inlet and lagoon for a river, American River is Kangaroo Island’s seafood capital, and known for its scenic hiking trails, wildlife and historic shipping industry landmarks. Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge provides quality 4-star accommodation and panoramic views in the heart of American River.
  • Cygnet River – The historic rural heart of Kangaroo Island, Cygnet River is home to several pioneering industries of the island, including a historic eucalyptus distillery, and apple orchard, with numerous proprietors keep to this same spirit today, with brewing, distilling, and cellar door operations in full flight. Koalas are one of the wildlife highlights here, with Duck Lagoon a great place to view these unique creatures in the wild, alongside a host of colourful birdlife. While accommodation is sparse in Cygnet River, Exceptional Kangaroo Island provides wonderful luxury tours of the region, renowned for their hospitality and experience-first approach.
  • Kingscote – As Kangaroo Island’s largest town, Kingscote is the service centre of the island, neighbouring Cygnet River and the North Coast. With its kid-friendly beaches, tidal pool, skate park, playgrounds, shops, and historic jetty, this bustling seaside town is a popular destination for families visiting Kangaroo Island. Aurora Ozone Hotel is located on the foreshore of town, and serves as an ideal base of operations for visitors to the island.
  • North Coast – As the name suggests, this region is located on the northern shores of Kangaroo Island, and features a raft of secluded coves, idyllic beaches, towering cliffs, and rugged scenery, alongside some of the best fishing on the island. North Coast is also home to pastoral lands, and some quality vineyards. We recommend visitors check out Emu Bay – one of the real highlights of the region, and a great picnic spot.
  • Parndana – Kangaroo Island’s heartland, Parndana is a town in the central inland region, founded by returning soldiers after World War 2. The township is known for its  historic Soldier Settler Museum on the outskirts of town, two general stores, and Italian Ligurian bee honey sanctuary – the bee was originally introduced to the island in the 1800s, and is now exclusively found on Kangaroo Island alone after inbreeding and disease has eliminated the species elsewhere. As Parnadana is centrally located, the town is a great place to stay to be within easy reach of all the island has to offer.
  • Penneshaw & Dudley Peninsula – Otherwise known as the East End of the island, Penneshaw is a tranquil seaside town which serves as a great base to explore the scenic vistas, walks, beaches, and historic landmarks found around the rest of the peninsula. Seafront Kangaroo Island offers 4-star accommodation in the heart of Penneshaw, and comes highly rated by previous guests.
  • South Coast – With their towering white-sand dunes and turquoise waters, the coves of the South Coast are highly regarded by locals and visitors alike, with Vivonne Bay,  previously a winner of Australia’s best beach award, one of the standout beaches, alongside the spectacular Seal Bay Conservation Park and its Australian sea lion colonies. Boutique eco-friendly South Coast accommodation is available at the luxurious Ecopia Retreat.
  • West End – Home to Flinder Chase National Park, several thriving penguin and fur seal colonies, Cape du Couedic lighthouse, and the magnificent Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks landmarks, Kangaroo Island’s West End is one of the most popular destinations on Kangaroo Island. While the region was severely impacted by the 2019-2020 Kangaroo Island bushfires, the island’s western side has made the most of an impressive transformation to date, with green vegetation now dotting the landscape, and almost all attractions now open to the public once more. However, accommodation options are still few and far between at the time of writing.
